Cold-dyeing technique launched at SpinExpo Shanghai

The Woolmark Company continues to pave the way for leading research and development within the global textile industry.

The latest Merino wool innovation was unveiled at SpinExpo Shanghai in September, with The Woolmark Company working in collaboration with Xinao Textile Inc to produce special cold-dyeing technology.

Vintage-looking garments with faded and washed-out effects have seen a rise in sales across recent years. This trend prompted Xinao Textile Inc to further investigate dyeing techniques to attain the desired look, resulting in Lantique Yarn. The promotion of Lantique Yarn and the cold-dyeing technology received very positive feedback at SpinExpo from both agents and clients.

The classic approach to creating a vintage look on textiles is to apply pigments, fixed to the fabric with special binders that can be partially removed during garment washing. However, this approach often compromises handle and rubbing fastness. Furthermore, pigment systems are only suitable for garment application, which requires extra skills from the knitter or weaver.

This new technique has been developed to enable Merino wool yarns to possess an inherent ability to fade on washing. This type of Merino wool yarn can be knitted as normal, but then during special wet finishing of the knitwear the colour of the garment is partially removed from the wool fibre surface, resulting in an antique or faded look.

Features and benefits of this new yarn:

  • Colour fades during industrial washing to create frosted or vintage faded looks on garments
  • Soft handle is maintained because binders are not used
  • Knitting efficiency is maintained
  • Machine wash levels of washing and the dry rubbing fastness is good
  • Yarns are offered hank-dyed in two-fold form for bulk and softness
